I had a specific purpose and inspiration in creating the music. I generally create music because it's something I want to hear that no one else has made to my satisfaction (keywords "to my satisfaction"). I guess it's like making your own clothes that fit and look exactly the way you want because the stores don't make what you want. It does fit square into the house genre so some may not agree that I've really achieved much uniqueness. I guess it's like not noticing someone's custom made jeans looking any different than the rest of the jeans everyone else is wearing that day. It's only the wearer that benefits or notices. In short, I make music that I like for myself and if others like it, great. Otherwise, I'm happy to listen to it myself. :-)
Here's what I put into my album that I think makes it unique, at least for me. Again, I mostly just make music for myself, so for the ears of others these things might not be important.
- Percussion. I think most house music doesn't diversify the percussion enough. There's a drum beat and that's it. No congas, cowbells, bongos, agogo bells, timbalis, tablas, or any of the other cool percussion sounds from around the world. I love rich percussion and don't find it enough.
- Change. Most music is too repetitive for me. My attention span for the same repetitive sound is about 30 seconds, then I want a new sound. Parts of the song can stay the same, but I like new transitions.
- Transition. I like songs that have smooth and creative transitions from one part to another. I also like when one song fades into the next so the listener can barely tell that a new song has just started.
- Sound Diversity Along with my short attention span for repetition, I also like new and interesting sounds within each album.
Mixed in with funky and trance music are old vocal clips from famous voices such as Carl Sagan, Albert Einstein, James Brown, Yoda (yes, from Star Wars), the narrator from Rocky Horror Picture Show, and maybe best of all, an unidentified housewive on LSD taken from a video of scientific study of LSD in the 1950s.
I haven't posted this album for sale yet, but if you want a copy just fill out the contact form on this website and I'll email you a .zip file that you can put on your iPod.
